Morning all - just after some opinions from those who have been there! Currently mid renovation, and I'm turning some of my thoughts to the upstairs flooring as hopefully we'll be doing the last bit of plastering soon.
It's a normal 30's build with wooden joists and floorboards. We're not interested in wooden flooring, we're just going to carpet throughout.
There's nothing majorly wrong with the boards that I've noticed, except that good portions of them have been butchered over the years by various trades (Electricians and plumbers, I'm looking at you!). But, I've not spent any real time looking for creaking boards and we've never lived there.
From what I gather, my options seem to be:
1) Leave them alone - but the floorboards I / others have taken up back and leave it at that (Probably the shit option)
2) Cut out the crappy bits and replace with new boards. Obviously I'll need to trim down the T&G, and I've not looked to see if I can get boards of the same thickness. What would the tolerance be there?
3) Replace the lot
4) Overboard with ply or something
I kind of like the idea of replacing them (Apparently I'm something of a perfectionist), but money is a consideration. But, while the house is in the state it's in (No carpets, no skirting, no architraves etc) I'm wondering if I should take the opportunity.
However, I'm unlikely to have the time to do this myself so may have to pay someone which isn't ideal.
I'm going to insulate between the floors (Primarily for sound proofing), so I guess the gaps between the floorboards won't matter that much?
