Eric (Winkle) Brown died yesterday, aged 97.

He flew 487 different types of aircraft, and will probably hold the record for the number of carrier deck landings and launches for the rest of time.

Kirsty Young said after he was the 3,000th Desert Island castaway "When you read through his life story, it makes James Bond seem like a bit of a slacker".

He probably was working for MI6/SIS before the war, in Germany. He spoke fluent German, and interviewed many German senior commanders post-war.

Desert Island Discs recording.
