Heater

So I have 2 ideas for a heater in the subaru-bug;
  1. Utilise the original legacy heater fan and matrix (the matrix is surprisingly small) and modify the fan housing to suit. I have bench tested it so that it sucks warm air from the matrix rather than blows across it.

    This would need either mating to a T25 3 speed switch (with a matching heater resistor or finding another that would be suitable, I have found that a Punto MK2 switch is seperate from the rest of the heating controls so contemplating using that. Along with a ford matrix valve bypass, AKA Ricola, to control the temperature with a 12v PWM for fine tuning

OR
  1. My housemate has a mini and has picked up a spare mini heater matrix which includes the fan and housing as a smallish standalone unit. In the mini they fit inside the cabin and this would be done the same down the bottom (in the middle) underneath the dash. It only has 2 speeds - on or off :lol: but I'm sure this could also be mated to the same system as above for fan and temperature control.

    The benefit of this system would be that it has direction control for the screen and the rest of the car. So I can link this to the (currently non-existent) pipework into the dash vents and heater channels.

It would be working in reverse for the direction of air flow compared to standard beetle heating but means I can still utilize the rear ducting etc (but block the bakelite tubes). I'd also have to run pipework from the block to the front as the EJ20's have the outlet on the rear of the block for the matrix and my rad is at the back also so cannot tap from there.

What do you think would be the best solution? I guess it depends on how much work I want to do, the subaru one will have more power at the fan but need more fabrication however it can be hidden in the bonnet storage area. The mini one has everything i need apart from the fan isn't all 'that' but it gives me the screen or car direction adjustment and it is already in a box ready to fit. The other thing is its not the prettiest of boxes and would be seen, its quite bulky so might get in the way.

Thoughts/suggestions welcome :)
