1976 Sun Beetle

I picked this up a few weeks ago. It had been off the road, garaged since 1988..

The special edition Sun Beetle went on sale in August 1975. The sale of Beetles was declining as people started to buy the new VW Golf and Polo models, so VW released several special edition Beetles to entice potential owners to opt for air over water!

The Sun Beetle featured a steel sliding Golde sunroof, Sunshine Yellow or Sunshine Orange paint, rubber bumper inserts, passenger mirror, rear heated window, an interior central tunnel tray, padded dashboard, cloth interior and Lemmerz GT wheels. The Sun Beetle was also fitted with a 1300 engine (all other Beetles at the time had 1200 engines). I'm not sure how many were built, but it wasn't that many!

This one was locked away in 1988, after 12 years of use as it refused to run properly. I've just re-commissioned it. It needed a new inlet manifold, carb rebuild, usual service stuff, brakes and suspension going through and tyres. It has never been welded and is still totally in original paint, with 79,000 miles on the clock from new. The painwork on the bonnet and roof is scabby, but that just adds to the car's character. Miraculously, the steel sliding sunroof works a treat and it now drives like a champ!
