For Sale - VW1302s (1971)
Unfortunately I have for sale here my 1302s, built February 1971, registered April 1971. (J reg)
The landlord where I store the car has decided to demolish the garages to build a house so I have been given notice that I must be out in a few weeks time.
I have owned this car for over 6 years now. (Bought as a 40th present to myself) I spent just over 2 years completely stripping and rebuilding the car and the last 4 driving it very occasionally. Since the rebuild I have only done approximately 1500 miles. Always dry stored in my ownership.
I rebuilt it in the ‘German look’ 1970’s road rally car style.
During the rebuild the following parts were fitted, the spec of the car is as follows:
ENGINE - Original AS41 AD code 1600 twin port, crank case split, cleaned and flushed through all the oilways
Original crankshaft and cam reused as still within spec, new crank, cam and big end bearings fitted All new seals fitted where required
New Mahle 1641 Barrel and pistons with bugpack tru-arc circlips on the gudgeon pins
New Shadek high capacity oil pump and alloy degree pulley fitted, new oil cooler fitted
Heads stripped and cleaned, 2mm skim to raise compression, 8 new valves and bugpack hi-rev spring kit with hardened collets and chromoly retainers
SCAT bolt up rocker shafts with forged rockers (1.25:1) and billet shafts with SCAT swivel feet adjusters
Jaycee racing billet pushrod tubes and Alloy finned bolt on rocker covers
Carburettors are genuine Italian Weber 40 IDF’s sat on CB performance manifolds together with CB performance linkage and filters, custom made 27mm chokes and jetted for the engine spec
Front mounted FACET electronic fuel pump feeding a Malpassi filter king fuel pressure regulator and filter assembly with pressure gauge
Powerspark electronic ignition inside a genuine (not Chinese) Bosch 009 Distributor, Bosch coil, 8mm Silicone plug leads NGK spark plugs
OMEX Clubman Electronic rev limiter (smooth cut) to protect the engine
Bugpack breather system, crankcase and filler neck
New 36 hp style twin port dog-house fan shroud and engine tinware
‘J’ tubes onto EMPI turbo trip hideaway exhaust
New clutch and release bearing
Engine run on Valvoline Racing VR1 oil
GEARBOX - I fitted an AM code gearbox for the 4.4 final drive for nippier acceleration. It is filled with Redline heavy duty shockproof oil, intermediate mount fitted. Gearbox mounts are all urethane
All suspension mounts are polybushed, rear suspension lowered 1 spline with new shocks, front lowered 3” with new VW Heritage coil springs. New drums, cylinders and shoes fitted to the rear, new callipers discs and pads on the front.
The body was repaired as necessary with new panels fitted as required. The floors, heater channels, body panels, engine bay etc are all in vgc. I painted the car myself, it is presentable but not show class. I painted roof white so as it was not too purple and to keep it cooler in the summer. I have de-chromed the body trim and bumpers colour coded. Quick release deck lid. Wheels are period KN Gemini alloys, new centre caps, bolts and 4x new (July 2016) tyres fitted 195’s on the rear, 175’s on the front.
Genuine Kamei front spoiler with period LUCAS spotlights (not wired up) and period baby turbo mirrors. One piece windows and new cal look rubbers fitted.
The interior largely original except for MX5 front seats fitted on original runners, slide them out to return to standard. Also fitted is a 14” steering wheel with auxiliary oil pressure gauge. Rear seat belts fitted. The battery is relocated inside a battery box behind the rear seat.
AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT – The interior could do with tidying up. The one piece windows look good and suit the car but are not good in operation. They tend to tip as you wind them up/down. They need the winder mechanism’s from a 1964-68 bug (twin lifter) fitted to cure this. The rear seat upright has deteriorated along the top due to sun damage; I would re-cover the rear seats. Adding a full carpet set and a new set of door cards would finish off the interior nicely.
I have lots of spares that can go with the car if wanted:
Pair of standard doors with quarterlights, glass, winders (could be used to replace the one piece windows) Pair Genuine front wings, front struts, springs (std and -2”) track control arms, rear irs arms, steering boxes and linkages, front stub axles, steering column and switches, electrical spares, switches, lights etc + lots more...
Car is currently MOT’d, until September 14th I have not managed to do 200 miles in her since the last MOT. I will happily re-test the car for a new buyer.
£3750 ono, for everything, send me a PM if you are interested or have any further questions.
I am in Stroud, Gloucestershire, about 10 mins from J13 M5.
The pictures below were taken on Sunday July 10th 2016.
